BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – All around the Greater Binghamton Area, there is plenty of talent that represents Section IV and the Southern Tier in athletics. Over the past 11 years, numerous of these individuals, and even teams, have been recognized and honored at the annual Greater Binghamton Sports Hall of Fame.
Hundreds of people turned out to show their support for 12 individuals and a team inducted into the Hall of Fame. The 11th event of its kind drew yet another significant turnout, with some of the best in our area earning the honor of having their names imprinted in Southern Tier history.
“I could tell just by when I initially spoke to them that they really appreciate it and we’re grateful for the honor,” said organizer Anthony Quagliata.
Some greats from our area were honored tonight, including one of the most prestigious voices in Southern Tier history, Roger Neel, baseball great Brian Jester, and women’s boxer Wendy Casey, to name just a few, with the team being honored being the 1979 U-E Tigers football team, who were ranked #1 in the state, and #18 nationwide.
The guest speaker of the evening was Giants great, Super Bowl winner, and NFL Hall of Famer Harry Carson, who was a linebacker for the New York Giants from 1976 to 1988.
“It means an awful lot. One of the big reasons is, again, that I’ve been able to cover a lot of the people who are already involved in the Hall of Fame,” said Sports Broadcaster Roger Neel.
