The article ranks the top defensive linemen and edge rushers for the 2026 NFL Draft, highlighting their versatility and impact. David Bailey from Texas Tech tops the list, showcasing exceptional athleticism and pass-rushing potential.
In the era of position-versatile athletes and defensive schemes that have to adapt to stop anything the offense can throw their way, the lines have never been more blurred in terms of defensive positions in football. In this article, we’re looking at primary defensive linemen and edge rushers – a group that I will refer to as “hand in the dirt” players who begin snaps from a 3-or 4-point stance. Here are our top-10 “hand in the dirt” players in the 2026 NFL Draft Class:

After entering the portal when Stanford fired their coach, Bailey was the big fish in the transfer portal prior to the 2025 season, and received a boatload of money to go play at Texas Tech. He was worth every penny. With his natural athleticism and arsenal of moves, Bailey was one of the best edge defenders in all of college football last season and has the potential to be one of the NFL’s elite pass rushers.
Bain was one of the breakout stars of the 2025-2026 College Football Playoff, totalling 5 sacks and thoroughly dominating the Texas A&M game. He’s an explosive athlete with a great first step. The only knock on him is that he has short arms, and bigger, NFL-caliber tackles may be able to get their hands on him a little easier than college ones did.
The motor never stops with Akheem Mesidor, and he and Rueben Bain Jr accounted for the best pass rush duo in college football last season. He possesses position versatility, as he previously played inside at West Virginia. His motor can get him into trouble, however, as he often overplays or overextends, which can lead to missed tackles or being out of position. An NFL D-Line coach who gets him to play under control without losing that patented motor will do him very well.
The former Auburn Tiger possesses the most position versatility out of anyone at the top of this class. He stands 6’6” and weighs over 270 pounds, which is a body type that can fit into multiple positions in multiple schemes. But Faulk is a jack-of-all-trades and master of none. He’s an above-average run defender and pass-rusher, but is not elite at either of them.
The top defensive linemen include David Bailey from Texas Tech and Rueben Bain Jr from Miami.
David Bailey is recognized for his natural athleticism and impressive pass-rushing skills, making him a top prospect.
The increasing versatility of defensive players allows them to adapt to various schemes, influencing their rankings in the NFL Draft.
Rueben Bain Jr is an edge rusher, contributing significantly to his team's defensive strategy.

The SEC Defensive Player of the Year got his start at Bowling Green before transferring up to Texas A&M. Simply put, he was a beast for the Aggies, flying all over the field and disrupting every offense he went against. The combine did him no favors, however, as he has historically short arms and wingspan for the position, and that may scare some teams away from him.
The 326-pound McDonald is a throwback nose tackle, and I have no problem with that. He’s an unmovable force in the middle of the defense, and dominated some of the best offensive lines in college football last season (go watch the Texas game). His pass rush needs some work if he wants to be on the field for all 3 downs, but drafting McDonald will make any team’s run defense that much better.
How much does speed matter for a defensive end? TJ Parker ran a decent 4.68 40-yard dash at the combine, but he plays much slower. You never see him run down plays from the backside or win footraces against offensive skill players. But when the play comes to him, Parker is incredibly disruptive – he totaled 6 forced fumbles in 2024 alone.
Woods is a prototypical athlete who almost defies the laws of physics with how someone so big can move so fast and gracefully. His technique will need some coaching up, but he possesses all of the physical tools and more to be a great defensive tackle in the NFL.
Pass rush specialist. Period. R Mason Thomas is just straight up a great pass rusher. He’s fast, he gets off the ball incredibly fast, he has a full arsenal of moves, and he can take over any game he plays in. The problem is that he’s just not built to defend the run at the NFL level quite yet, and would likely be a passing-down-only player for his first NFL season or two.
At 6’6” and 330 pounds, Banks is a massive interior lineman who commands double-teams. Good luck blocking him with one person. He played everywhere on the defensive line for Florida, which means he doesn’t need to be pigeon-holed into a role as a nose tackle or a 3-technique – he can do both. He injured his foot at the combine, which may raise a red flag for some teams. Big guys and foot injuries often do not end well.
