In a somewhat surprising development, the Michigan Wolverines gained the commitment on Thursday afternoon from 2027 four-star defensive lineman Xavier Muhammad.
The Houston, Texas native was initially planning on announcing his commitment on July 3, but he clearly saw enough from Michigan this spring to make his commitment now. He was offered by new defensive tackles coach Larry Black in February, and he then took an unofficial visit in April. That visit went so well that it seemed to have caught him off guard a little bit.
“My expectations, it blew up because it was low-key way more than I expected,” Muhammad told On3’s Ethan McDowell ($) after that visit. “In person, everything’s bigger and everything. The staff, I love the coaching staff, everybody there.
“Right when I got there, the love and connection was already there. We talked about different things, fronts and everything, where they see me at. The bond with me and coach Black just keeps getting stronger and stronger every time we see each other again.”
Muhammad will take his official visit to Michigan for Victor’s Weekend, which is the weekend of June 19. He will more than likely cancel his other official visits, as he had other visits set up for Stanford, Houston, Miami and TCU. He was also strongly considering Notre Dame, Arizona State, Vanderbilt and Kentucky.
The Wolverines now have three four-star recruits committed along the defensive line in this class, as Muhammad joins edge rushers Recarder Kitchen and Jayce Brewer, the latter of whom committed last weekend. Michigan is now up to nine total commitments in the 2027 cycle.
Muhammad is ranked No. 12 in the state of Texas, No. 10 at the defensive line position and No. 102 overall on the Rivals Industry Ranking. Check out his junior year highlights below.
