The 2026 season has plenty of fun storylines heading into what has been a very interesting start to the season. But the resurgence of Mike Trout for the Los Angeles Angels might be one of the best stories this year.
The future Hall of Famer had been struggling the last few seasons, but this year, he looks back to his prime self amid a career resurgence. How did Trout do it?
ESPN's Buster Olney shared three changes that Trout made in the offseason that have led to this resurgence, and those changes aren't any mechanical or on-field changes. They are all off-the-field adjustments that have clearly worked so far this year.
"In the past, he would do an upper-body workout twice a week, a lower-body regimen twice a week, and then take Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday off," Olney writes. "Instead, he's working out daily, but sometimes to activate his physiology instead of lifting heavier weights - he might do as few as eight reps of the same exercise and call it a day."

This is a very fascinating adjustment made by Trout to help get into better shape. While he's working out more often than he has in previous years, there's a big difference in how he's approaching these workouts.
Trout isn't trying to set any personal records with working out; he's just keeping his body in shape and ready to go, even if it means a short workout.
"Trout hired a nutritionist and focused on eating less junk food on the couch before he goes to sleep, and along the way, his weight dropped to 230 pounds, which is about eight to 10 pounds less than in previous seasons," Olney writes.
This change for Trout is a noteworthy, but simple one. It's sometimes as simple as just eating better, and by doing so, Trout felt the positive side effects.
Trout noted how he felt the difference in his knees and legs in late winter, as he was in much better condition than he was in previous years.
"His adjustments went beyond workouts and included a mental reframing that started last fall," Olney writes. "As a parent to two young children, Trout embraced each moment with his kids."
Trout is spending more time with his family than he did before, and overall, is approaching things from a much healthier mental state.
"I've made a point of slowing down this year," Trout said. That's not regarding his play-speed, but rather how he approaches things outside of baseball. It's clearly working.
Trout is in his 16th season in the big leagues, and he's having one of the best starts to a season of his career.
He is hitting .250 with 10 homers and 21 RBIs with a .954 OPS. Trout looks to be back to his All-Star self, and it's been thanks to some off-the-field work.
Between the more efficient workout regimen, his healthier eating habits, and his better mindset with more time spent with his family, Trout is rediscovering his youth and looks as good as he's looked in quite some time.
