The Indianapolis Colts signed safety Nasir Adderley, marking their third addition at the position this offseason. Adderley last played in an NFL game in 2022 before briefly retiring and announcing his return to the league in February 2023.
The Indianapolis Colts made their third addition at the safety position this offseason, signing Nasir Adderley with the 2026 NFL draft near.
With the news still fresh, here are three instant takeaways from the Colts' latest free agency move.
Nasir Adderley hasn't played in three seasons
The last time that Adderley suited up in an NFL game was in 2022. During the 2023 offseason, Adderley made the decision to retire. He then announced in February of this year that he intended to return to the NFL.
In his final season with the Chargers, Adderley allowed 13 receptions on 20 targets, surrendering 13.2 yards per catch -- the most of his career. He also came away with two interceptions and two pass breakups. Adderley's missed tackle rate of 12.5% that year was the lowest of his career, per PFF.
Why did the Colts sign another safety?
The Colts have now signed Adderly, Jonathan Owens, and Juanyeh Thomas in free agency. Also on the roster is Hunter Wohler, who will also be in the mix for the starting job next to Cam Bynum.
Whether any one of those players can secure the starting role and provide a consistent presence is unknown, but with several players competing for those snaps, the Colts are at least giving themselves options.
When it comes to Adderley, given that most of his career snaps have come at free safety and that he hasn't played in several seasons, this addition may be more about depth and Chris Ballard taking a swing on a former second-round pick who has NFL experience, which the Colts could use more of at this position.
Adderley won't be a lock to make the Colts' final 53-man roster.
What does this signing mean for the Colts in the NFL draft?
It should not impact things at all. If the right player is available, then Ballard needs to make that selection. Despite the additions made at safety this offseason, question marks still linger.
Why did Nasir Adderley retire from the NFL before signing with the Colts?
Nasir Adderley retired during the 2023 offseason but later announced his intention to return to the NFL in February 2023.
How many safety positions have the Colts filled this offseason?
The Colts have made three additions at the safety position this offseason.
When was the last time Nasir Adderley played in an NFL game?
Nasir Adderley last played in an NFL game in 2022.
