Five-star edge prospect Anthony Sweeney has committed to Texas Tech after visiting the campus in early April. He chose Texas Tech over offers from LSU and South Carolina.
In early April, Baltimore (MD) St. Frances Academy five-star edge Anthony Sweeney took his first trip to Lubbock to visit Texas Tech.
That one visit was all Sweeney needed to know that he had found his future home.
On Monday, Sweeney announced his commitment to Texas Tech, choosing the Red Raiders over LSU and South Carolina.
According to 247Sports, Sweeney ranks as the No. 23 player in the country, the No. 5 edge prospect and No. 2 player out of Maryland for the 2027 class.
Sweeney transferred to St. Frances Academy from Good Counsel (MD) where he totaled 34 tackles, five tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks in 11 games in 2025.
Texas Tech quietly building one of the nation's top 2027 classes
While Texas Tech isn't the usual suspect when it comes to top recruiting classes at the end of each cycle, those days appear to be coming to an end.
Since Joey McGuire arrived in Lubbock, the Red Raiders have steadily improved their class rankings, highlighted by a 2026 class that 247Sports ranked No. 14 overall.
With Sweeney's pledge, their 2027 class is headlined by a pair of five-star prospects. Cedar Hill (TX) five-star lineman Jalen Brewster committed to Texas Tech last October.
Of Texas Tech's seven pledges so far, five rank as four-star prospects or better, and four rank as top-60 recruits nationally.
Offensively, the class is led by Summer Creek (Humble, TX) four-star receiver Benny Easter Jr. and Palestine Wood (TX) four-star quarterback Kavian Bryant.
