A former Vikings QB is at the center of a notable position battle

The quarterback situation for the Minnesota Vikings has been a whirlwind experience for fans over the last decade. They thought they had their franchise answer in Kirk Cousins, only for him to get the team over the hill but not the mountain. They saw Sam Darnold arrive to play hero when their top draft pick, J.J. McCarthy, went down for the year only for him to leave town and win a Super Bowl this year with the Seattle Seahawks.

One of the players mentioned, though, Kirk Cousins, is still looking for his new home to be able to find success. He finds himself in the middle of one of the more notable quarterback battles after the team drafted Fernando Mendoza first overall this year.

Bleacher Report's Kristopher Knox laid out the state of the battle, writing, "Of course, Las Vegas signed veteran Kirk Cousins to ensure Mendoza won't have to take over before he is ready. . .We're excited to see how Mendoza compares to a four-time Pro Bowler in Cousins and how his skills mesh with Klint Kubiak's offense. And we can't wait to see him in camp and the preseason because, if all goes according to Las Vegas' plan, we might not see Mendoza again until 2027."

After months of him being speculated to be returning to Minnesota, he may find himself in a good enough situation, even with Mendoza present, to sustain himself. At the very least, it seems his years of being anything more than a security option on the depth chart seem to be behind him.
