A new chapter begins: San Marino launch first womenâs senior national team
For the first time in their history, San Marino has taken a decisive step into the womenâs game, officially launching a senior national team and marking a long-overdue moment for the microstate on the international stage.
In a country where its menâs side has long defined football, this move signals more than just a new squad. It represents growth, opportunity, and a shift towards a more inclusive future.
The teamâs creation represents a landmark moment for the San Marino Football Federation (FSGC). It signals both sporting ambition and long-term commitment to growth.
Unveiled at the San Marino Stadium on Monday, the project represents the culmination of years of grassroots work and the beginning of a new pathway into international football. For FSGC president Marco Tura, the significance of the occasion went far beyond the announcement of a new squad.
âThis is a historic event,â Tura said. âWe are embarking on a journey that will soon allow us to present ourselves to European football in a sector that, until now, we had never been able to fully develop, despite our desire to do so.â
Until lately, a lack of player numbers has prevented the launch of their senior womenâs team. The circumstance has now changed, driven by growing participation and sustained investment in youth development.
The senior team, which former Italy international Giulia Domenichetti will coach, enjoyed its first training camp this week, forming part of a broader expansion of the womenâs game in San Marino, which already includes participation in UEFA Womenâs Underâ19 EURO qualifying.
âThere is a movement in strong growth,â Manzaroli added. âToday we are not presenting only a national team, we are presenting a vision for the future of womenâs football in San Marino.â
