The High Desert will host a piece of Mexican soccer history this weekend.
For one day, the passion of “El Clásico de México,” the most iconic rivalry in Mexican soccer, comes to Adelanto as legends of Chivas de Guadalajara and Club America take the field at 4 p.m. on Sunday at the Adelanto Plaza & Event Center.
Headlining the Chivas side are two of the club’s most recognizable figures, Ramon Ramirez, a 1990s icon and Mexican national team standout, and Francisco Palencia.
Ramirez, a fan favorite, played for the Chivas from 1994 to 1998 and again from 2002 to 2004. In a rare twist in the rivalry, he also spent time with America in 1999, where he scored three goals during his stint.
Palencia, widely recognized for his career with Cruz Azul, also had a run with the Chivas from 2003 to 2005. The midfielder scored 13 goals in 73 appearances.
Among the confirmed players for America are Reinaldo Navia and Matias Vuoso.
Navia scored 20 goals in 39 appearances for America from 2004 to 2005, while Vuoso recorded 27 goals across multiple stints with the club, including a 22-goal stretch between 2010 and 2012.
The exhibition match gives soccer fans a rare chance to relive that history. Especially for those who never had the opportunity to see it in person.

“That’s really what this is about,” said Jaime Soto, one of the event’s organizers. “It’s a great event for those of us that didn’t get a chance to see them when they were still active. Most of these players, their games were played in Mexico and a lot of immigrants never had that chance to go back home and see them play in a game.”
Soto said the Victor Valley was a natural fit for the event.
“We’ve noticed that there is a growing soccer community,” Soto said. “We are from Lancaster and we know what it’s like to always get ignored when it comes to big events coming to us.”
Sunday’s showcase is about more than just the action on the field.
There’s a full fan festival, complete with music, vendors, contests and a halftime experience which will bring some fans onto the field.
“We’re going to make it a fun, family-friendly event,” Soto said. “It will be kind of like if you were able to go to a Mexican soccer league game in the 1990s or early 2000s.”
Southern California comedian Jerry Garcia will also be part of the event, and for him, the day carries a deeper meaning.
“I’m so excited, man,” Garcia told the Daily Press. “I’m looking forward to this game, watching true Mexican legends on the field at one time. I know they’re retired, past their prime, but it’s going to be an exciting event to get to watch in person.”
Garcia added that rivalries like America-Chivas still carry weight regardless of allegiances.
“I’m not an America or a Chivas fan, I’m a Pumista. A Pumas fan, which plays third fiddle with this rivalry,” Garcia said. “But most importantly, I’m taking my dad to this game. He’s going to be with me. He’s 73 years old, and he’s never attended a professional soccer game before. So this is going to be something very exciting for me and to share with my dad as a memory.”
Tickets can be purchased through Ticketon. General admission tickets are $40.50, while VIP packages are $129.50 and include a pregame meet-and-greet with players, a team T-shirt and premium seating. The gates open at 2 p.m.
