The Philadelphia 76ers are confident in their ability to bounce back after a 137-98 loss to the Knicks in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference semifinals. They previously overcame a 3-1 series deficit against the Celtics and believe they can make necessary adjustments to improve.
The Philadelphia 76ers overcame a 3-1 series deficit to defeat the Boston Celtics in the first round of these NBA playoffs.
So you can be sure theyâre not panicking after falling into a 1-0 hole in the Eastern Conference semifinals â no matter how lopsided Monday nightâs 137-98 loss to the Knicks may have looked.
âWe kind of started the Boston series off like this, right?â guard Kelly Oubre Jr. said Tuesday after a film session in Midtown. âBut we made adjustments. We got better each and every game, so I expect the same from this series. Only up from here.â
Indeed, the seventh-seeded Sixers suffered a 32-point loss to the second-seeded Celtics in Game 1 of the previous round before making dramatic defensive improvements as that series wore on.
But while the Celtics were shells of themselves by the end of that series â with star forward Jayson Tatum missing Game 7 due to knee stiffness â the third-seeded Knicks are on a historic surge.
Mondayâs 39-point victory was the Knicksâ third win in a row by at least 29 points. Never in NBA history had a team won three consecutive playoff games by at least 25 points before that.
The Knicks shot 63.1% from the field â a franchise record for a playoff game â in Game 1, with Jalen Brunson scoring 35 points on 12-of-18 shooting and OG Anunoby adding 18 points on 7-of-8.
âItâs the adversity part of it, and our backs are against the wall,â 76ers rookie guard VJ Edgecombe said Tuesday.
âItâs been like that the whole postseason, so weâve just got to go and play hard and stay together. Weâre going to face adversity. Every team is going to face adversity at some point. Now, we know what we have to do.â
There are obvious areas where the Sixers can improve.
It starts with Joel Embiid, who scored only 14 points on 3-of-11 shooting, and , who finished with 13 points and shot 3-of-9 from the field. That duo averaged a combined 54.9 points per game during the Celtics series.

And the Knicks had three days of rest before Mondayâs rout, compared to a Sixers team that had just completed a hard-fought, seven-game series on Saturday.
âIt doesnât matter if we wouldâve lost by one or 40 or 50. It doesnât matter,â Embiid said after Mondayâs defeat. âA loss is a loss. But I think it just starts with playing harder.â
Plenty can change over the course of a playoff series. Just ask the Knicks, who fell behind 2-1 to the Atlanta Hawks before delivering back-to-back-to-back blowout wins to clinch their first-round series.
Thatâs why Wednesday nightâs Game 2 at Madison Square Garden is important for both teams.
âWe donât feel too high or too low,â Oubre said. âI think that we stay even-keeled. We also know, in the back of our head, weâre always capable of being better and doing more.â
Sixers head coach Nick Nurse left the team after Game 1 to attend his older brotherâs funeral services in Ankeny, Iowa, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Nurseâs brother, Steve, died unexpectedly last week at age 62.
âIâd like to pass my condolences along to Nick Nurse and his family, his brotherâs family, and all their friends,â Knicks head coach Mike Brown said Tuesday. âLife is precious, and you donât wish that upon anybody.â
Nurse was expected to rejoin the 76ers on Tuesday night.
