The Philadelphia 76ers suffered a heavy 137-98 loss to the New York Knicks in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference semifinals. Coach Nick Nurse noted the team's fatigue after a tough first-round series, and star player Joel Embiid played while injured.
Coming into a quick turnaround at Madison Square Garden following a grueling seven-game first-round series, Philadelphia 76ers head coach Nick Nurse said he welcomed not having more of a break in the schedule.
âYou donât want any space between them, just keep them coming,â he emphasized on Monday before the start of this Eastern Conference semifinal series.
After watching his team get beat down in a 137-98 Game 1 loss, it looked like Nurseâs squad desperately needed the rest.
The Knicks handled the 76ers with minimal issues at the Garden on Monday night.
The Sixersâ best player â Joel Embiid â played hurt, the team misfired on several good looks before the game got out of hand and the Knicks executed offensively without much resistance for four quarters.
The effort looked like a direct result of a road team that just wrapped up another long, physical series against the Celtics in Boston on Saturday night.
âComing from the series we had, and the physicality we displayed, I would like to think maybe guys were tired,â Embiid said after Game 1 on Monday. âItâs not an excuse. On to Game 2. Down 1-0 so focus on the next one.â
Along with poor drop defense on Jalen Brunson, who led all scorers with 35 points, Philadelphiaâs Paul George credited the lopsided performance to lots of breakdowns on their end.
He added the Knicks came out hot and âshot the sât out of the ball.â
The Knicks shot 63% from the field and 19-of-37 (51%) from beyond the arc. The 76ers managed just 11 made treys on 30 attempts (37%) while shooting 41% from the field.
The 76ers lost to the Knicks with a score of 137-98 in Game 1.
The 76ers struggled due to fatigue from a grueling first-round series and poor shooting performance.
Joel Embiid played hurt and was part of a team that misfired on several scoring opportunities during the game.

âItâs a game of adjustments,â George said. âWeâll make adjustments. See where we need to get better at.â
The lone benefit from a Game 1 blowout was Nurse being able to pull his starters well before the final buzzer sounded. With the team hovering around a 30-point deficit, which would eventually grow to 40, there was no need to keep in key players that would again be needed to start in Wednesdayâs Game 2.
The rest was especially needed for Embiid, who entered Game 1 as probable with a right hip contusion. Embiid also seemed hurt after Mikal Bridges made hard contact running through a screen minutes before halftime. Embiid, who underwent emergency appendectomy surgery last month, stayed in the game after bending over in pain near halfcourt following the blow.
He later checked out of the game for the final time at the 6:03 mark of the third quarter with his team down 29.
Nurse said postgame that he pulled the star with the game out of hand and not because of any injury reason.
The series now shifts to Game 2 with a chance for the 76ers to steal home-court advantage before returning home for Game 3 at Xfinity Mobile Arena.
âIf we lose by seven or 70 it doesnât really matter,â Tyrese Maxey said. âThey won one game and we lost one game. Like [Paul George] said we gonna make some adjustments and weâll be ready for Game 2. Game 1 doesnât carry over to Game 2.
âWeâll be ready to play.â
