Apr. 15—AIKEN — The pieces are coming together for one of Aiken's most popular late-April traditions, with thousands of walkers, joggers and runners and hundreds of volunteers having April 25 circled on their calendars for Run United, a fundraiser for United Way of Aiken County.
Dozens of volunteers met at Aiken Electric Cooperative's headquarters April 14 to discuss the home stretch in planning for this year's event, which is to be based in Newberry Street's festival area and offer morning mileage in several neighborhoods via such routes as South Boundary Avenue, Two Notch Road and Colleton Avenue.
The meeting, run by Keyatta Priester, Aiken Electric Cooperative's manager of community development, also included accolades for several individuals and organizations honored for outstanding support of Run United. Saluted were Tabernacle Baptist Church, Lee Love, Salvation Army, South Aiken High School's Naval Junior ROTC program, Dereck Shealy, Teresa Livingston, Mark Hartley and Phillip Poole.
Also helping provide manpower and dollars for this year's event are such organizations as CarolinaConnect, Aiken Standard, AllStar Tents and Events, Fleet Feet, Aiken Regional Medical Centers, Security Federal Bank, Aiken County's government and Aiken's municipal government.
Run United includes four options: a half-marathon (13.1 miles), a 10K (6.2 miles) a 5K (3.1 miles) and a fun run for children (one mile). The half-marathon and 10K both begin at 7:30 a.m. The 5K starts at 7:45 a.m., and the one-miler begins at 9:30 a.m.
Pre-race packet pick-up and registration will be available 3-7 p.m. April 24 at Aiken Center for the Arts. Race-day packet pick-up will only be available under approved extreme circumstances for out-of-town guests at USC Aiken's downtown location building.
Priester noted that the master of ceremonies is to be Ed Girardeau, largely known for his years as an Aiken City Council member and also as the broker/owner of a local real estate firm.
Participation in the fun run will be free for the first 500 kids to sign up. Registration fees range from $55 to $80, plus a sign-up fee. For more information, call 803-648-8331.
