Alan Shearer calls for Man United to retain Michael Carrick as permanent head coach

When asked if Carrick is the man to take them forward, Shearer told BBC: “They brought him in to do a specific job, and he has done that job very, very well.

“He’s won in big games as well. He’s beaten [Manchester] City, beaten Arsenal, beaten Liverpool.

“So for me, yes, he at least deserves the chance to go again. I don’t know, maybe a one-year contract with different incentives if he hits different targets.

“But he was brought in to do a job, and he’s done that job.”

No club has won more Premier League points than United since Carrick took over, which is a massive credit to the former Middlesbrough manager.

He has managed to galvanise a squad that looked to have lost their way under Amorim, making United a force to be reckoned with once again.

With Champions League football now secured, the conversation has now shifted to whether Carrick has what it takes to take United to the next level.

The former United midfielder has plenty of admirers in the United board, and the players have also backed Carrick to remain at the club on a permanent basis.

It remains to be seen how United proceed from here, but Carrick has undoubtedly given the club hierarchy plenty to think about in their managerial search.
