Alvaro Cortes made his Barcelona debut on Wednesday night against Alaves and admitted it was the “happiest” day of his life despite his team being beaten 1-0.
The youngster also revealed what manager Hansi Flick told him before he stepped out onto the pitch with the rest of the first team.
“It’s a bittersweet feeling. I have a lot of mixed emotions about the match. My debut is the happiest day of my life. With the club I’ve supported since I was a kid. With my family and friends in the stands. Now all that’s left is to work hard so that more opportunities come,” he told reporters.
“I found out at lunch, when he asked me if I was ready. Flick told me to do what I do in training. To do what I know how to do. My teammates have given me positive messages and that gives you a boost of confidence for the match.”
Cortes also admitted that playing alongside familiar faces such as Pau Cubarsi and Gerard Martin was a big help.
“I’m two years older than Pau, but his career is incredible. Everything he’s achieved is admirable. Gerard and Ronald have also given me advice. Playing alongside these guys makes everything easier,” he added.
“This match was crucial for them. It didn’t go the way we wanted, but we congratulate Alavés on their victory and will continue working.”
The defeat means Barcelona’s dreams of finishing on 100 points are over. The Catalans are back in action on Sunday at home to .
