The Washington Commanders' offseason plan has had a distinct defensive flavor for general manager Adam Peters and head coach Dan Quinn.
The centerpiece of it all is Sonny Styles, but the Commanders also were buyers in free agency, with Odafe Oweh, Leo Chenal, and K'Lavon Chaisson.
So, the Commanders have bolstered the defense to the point where fans can be confident in what the unit can be in 2026.
And for CBS Sports' Zachary Pereles, one word describes Washington's offseason: speed.
“It's hard to watch Styles' 40-yard dash overlay with him beating CeeDee Lamb and Kyle Hamilton and not think speed,” Pereles wrote. “But it wasn't just Styles who Washington added to bring speed to a defense that desperately needed it. Odafe Oweh and K'Lavon Chaisson bring speed to the edge rush unit, and Leo Chenal brings it to the linebacking room alongside Styles. Add in safety Nick Cross, and the Commanders got better, more athletic and much faster across all three levels of the defense.”

For me, they absolutely do.
Aside from Terry McLaurin, who can you bank on to be productive and step up for Jayden Daniels on offense? Luke McCaffrey? Antonio Williams? Treylon Burks? Jacory Croskey-Merritt?
For me, that's a lot of unknowns in that bunch, which brings me to why the Commanders haven't added another genuine receiver for Daniels.
Of course, inside the building, they might have high hopes for the group I mentioned above, but that is banking on a lot happening. Plus, McLaurin needs help in the passing game, and I'd imagine defenses will simply double-team McLaurin and force Daniels to beat them with someone else.
There's still time, and, in my opinion, the Commanders have to get Daniels more help.
The key focus of the Washington Commanders' offseason is strengthening their defense.
Notable players acquired include Sonny Styles, Odafe Oweh, Leo Chenal, and K'Lavon Chaisson.
Fans can expect a confident and improved defense from the Commanders by 2026.
