Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert has long been viewed as one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL, despite never winning a playoff game (0-3) and a 52-43 record over his six seasons.
The talent is clearly there, but for whatever reason, the Chargers and Herbert can't get it done when it really counts.
Yes, injuries have played their role, as they did last season, but now with the offseason additions and Mike McDaniel as the coordinator, could Herbert be in the MVP conversation?
ESPN's Damien Woody thinks so.
"Yeah," Woody said on ESPN's Unsportsmanlike. "I think one of the biggest offseason additions was Mike McDaniel going to Los Angeles. I think he'll do wonders for that offense, and Justin Herbert, he's like a mad scientist as far as designing the run game.
"Remember they lost both tackles last year, two of their best players, so they getting those guys back to go along with Mike McDaniel, Justin Herbert is going to be in that conversation, mark it down. Book it."

You could certainly make that case, but haven't we been saying that for years now?
In truth, with McDaniel as his OC, Herbert now has the coordinator who can get the best out of him, not rely on the run game to shoulder most of the offensive load.
Herbert has the talent to make every throw, plus as a dual-threat quarterback, he can be devastating.
Is it put-up-or-shut-up time for Herbert? He has the coordinator, a good run game, a healthy offensive line, and some okay weapons; now it is up to him to bring it all together.
But as far as an MVP candidate? I'm not there yet.
