Meanwhile, United have been tracking Tchouameni ever since he began making a name for himself at AS Monaco.
He had attracted a host of suitors across Europe and in the Premier League, but, unsurprisingly, rebuffed them all in favour of Madrid in June 2022.
The Frenchman has since gone on to win a UCL and league title amongst several other accolades, so he’ll certainly feel as though his decision was justified.
Now that he’s approaching the penultimate season of his contract, INEOS have begun contemplating whether a deal for Tchouameni may be feasible in the coming months.
He is valued at around £70 million by the European giants, while United’s priority midfield target, Elliot Anderson, could cost as much as £125m, according to Laurie Whitwell.
When Whitwell was addressing the situation on the Talk of the Devils podcast, United expert Mitten said: “Interestingly, it’s someone who Ralf Rangnick identified that United should be signing four years ago.
“He was absolutely adamant with that (that the club should’ve gone all-out for Tchouameni). So it’s funny how these things come around.”
Mitten continued: “It might be him (Tchouameni) trying to get a better deal (from Madrid). You know – ‘Look where I could go to’. But my understanding for a couple of months has been: it is possible.”
