Arkansas basketball is exercising patience with zero commitments and no reported visits during the first week of the transfer portal window.
The quiet operations of John Calipari and the Razorbacks are expected to pick up this week. Calipari has returned to Fayetteville from a stint on the West Coast for the Wooden Award Ceremony in Los Angeles and the Nike Hoops Summit in Portland.
There's plenty of work to do with the portal closing on April 21. The Hogs have already lost D.J. Wagner and Karter Knox

Thomas has gone radio silent since the end of the season. He is expected to test the NBA Draft waters in the coming weeks and one Arkansas source described his decision as "50-50". Another source with the program said Thomas will go pro if he is guaranteed to be first-round selection through feedback with scouts and NBA front offices.
However, this year's draft class is one of the deepest in recent memory. The latest mock drafts from ESPN, CBS Sports, The Athletic, Tankathon and Yahoo Sports don't have Thomas going in the first round.
If Thomas returns for his sophomore season, Calipari has an ace shooter who will rack up big volume in the Arkansas offense. If not, the Hogs need to add a guard and maybe even two from the portal.
Those needs are exaggerated by the departures of Wagner and Knox. As it stands, the only pure guard guaranteed to be on the Arkansas roster in 2026-27 is incoming five-star freshman Jordan Smith Jr.
Calipari must have a good idea on Thomas' eventual decision so he can act accordingly through the portal.
Georgia's Jeremiah Wilkinson and BYU's Rob Wright are names who have been linked to Arkansas, according to reports from both On3Sports and 247Sports. Wilkinson averaged 17.4 points while shooting 41% overall and 35.7% on 3-pointers as a sophomore. The 6-foot-1 guard scored 30 points in the Bulldogs blowout loss to Saint Louis at the NCAA Tournament.
Wright averaged 18.1 points and 4.6 assists with a 46.7% shooting percentage. He also made 41% of his 3-pointers and is another 6-foot-1 guard.
Calipari ended the most recent season admitting that Arkansas needed to be bigger and more physical at the rim. However, he's also been consistent that he won't engage in any "bidding wars" for the top transfer portal prospects. Those two mindsets are a conflict when it comes to building a championship roster.
Bigs dominated at Michigan, Arizona and Duke dominated March Madness. Frontcourts were imposing strengths for each of the last two national champions in Michigan and Florida. It's going to cost a lot of money to lure the best centers in the portal to Fayetteville.
Multiple reports suggest that Georgia's Somto Cyril chose Miami due to a hefty financial commitment from the Hurricanes. Cyril's previous commitment to Calipari while the Hall of Fame coach was at Kentucky made Arkansas the presumed favorite when the 6-foot-11 center entered the portal. Those premonitions proved false.
Bigs like Georgia Tech's Mouhamed Sylla, Cincinnati's Moustapha Thiam and Seton Hall's Najai Hines remain intriguing options, but they will come with a large price tag. Arkansas is going to have to find even more money for a frontcourt rebuild if Malique Ewin does not receive an NCAA waiver for a fifth season of eligibility.
Calipari has hinted multiple times across each of his first two seasons that his small roster had negative consequences. He admitted it was an issue immediately following the Sweet 16 loss to Arizona, but the next week he went on ESPN and reiterated his love for shortened rotations.
If Calipari is ready to expand his playable bench, the Hogs have a lot of work to do in the next week. If not, there could only be a few additions to compliment the incoming freshmen and a group of potential returnees highlighted by Thomas and Billy Richmond III.
The wild cards are former four-star recruits Isaiah Sealy and Paulo Semedo. Can they develop into meaningful contributors next season. That would also lessen the pressure on this transfer-portal class, or Sealy and Semedo could be the compliments to a bigger roster that's more suited to deal with the inevitable injuries during a five-month season.
