Noni Madueke has been starting matches for Arsenal in Bukayo Saka’s recent injury absence, and that was the case again as the Gunners faced Sporting CP on Wednesday night.
Yet around the hour mark of the contest, Madueke was forced to withdraw with an apparent knee injury.
After the game, Madueke could be seen clearly limping, though he appeared to be in good spirits, smiling and laughing with teammates as they seemingly asked him about the problem.

Mikel Arteta wasn’t giving much away when asked about the injury in his press conference, saying: “I don’t know, it was something in his knee, so we had to take him off, so I don’t know.”
The concern is obviously that Madueke won’t be available to face Manchester City on Sunday, with also a serious doubt to feature in the match.

Arteta could call on 16-year-old Max Dowman, but for a game of this importance that might not be the best idea. Another solution would be to use a player out of position, such as Gabriel Jesus or Gabriel Martinelli, both of whom have played on the right in the past.

An optimistic perspective would be that we’ve already seen Madueke leave Wembley in a knee brace, only to play in Arsenal’s very next game. With any luck, this new knock will turn out to be similarly minor.
