Asheville High hires Anthony Gordon as new boys basketball coach
Asheville High will have a new boys basketball coach next season. Anthony Gordon has been hired as the Cougars' head coach, athletic director Sonita Warren-Dixon confirmed to the Citizen Times.
Gordon has served as an assistant coach on the boys basketball team. He will take over for Kobey Rudisill, who was the head coach for one season.
"We've got a great young core of kids that are very eager and hungry to take their experiences to another level," Gordon said. "I want to kickstart this thing with some energy and get the respect back that I believes this program deserves."
Rudisill was named the head football coach at East Henderson on April 8.
Gordon started his coaching career in eastern North Carolina, where he spent nine years coaching multiple sports between Midway and Lakewood. He accepted the head coaching job at University High in Johnson City, Tennessee, where he spent another nine years as a coach and athletic director.
Gordon has also been a head coach at Morriston West, Elizabethton and David Crockett, all in Tennessee. His career record is 296-167.
The Cougars went 1-21 in 2025-26, their second one-win season since 2021. Asheville High has not had a winning season since 2018-19.
"Not many coaches ever go into a situation that doesn't have its issues," Gordon said. "That's usually why they look for coaches. ... That is a particular niche I like, to establish a culture of accountability and work and development."
