Former Bristol City midfielder Jimmy Mann, one of the 'Ashton Gate Eight', has died at the age of 73.
Mann made 283 appearances for the Robins and scored 45 goals during an eight-year spell after joining the club in 1974.
He was one of eight players who tore up their contracts on 3 February 1982, to save the club from falling into bankruptcy, sacrificing their careers to prevent the team from going under.
"Jimmy Mann was known for wonderful shots at goal for Bristol City," said club president Marina Dolman.
"He was a player who gave his all and was, and has remained, very popular with us grateful Bristol City supporters, a very special player. I send my love to his dear wife and family."
Mann joined City from Leeds and also played for Barnsley, Doncaster Rovers and Scunthorpe United during his career.
Initially joining Bristol City as a striker, he switched to midfield under manager Alan Dicks.
He was part of the side that won promotion from Division Two in 1976, playing 36 games during the campaign.
But six years later, with the club facing financial ruin, Mann - along with Geoff Merrick, Gerry Sweeney, Dave Rodgers, Peter Aitken, Chris Garland, Trevor Tainton and Julian Marshall - agreed to cancel his contract and leave the club to prevent it from going under.
The octet were hailed as local heroes in the subsequent years and there is a plaque commemorating what they did at Ashton Gate.
