Aston Villa Probably Won’t Get Their 24-Year-Old Target Winger: Would He Actually Solve Their Problem?

Aston Villa go into the summer transfer window in a spot most clubs would envy. Unai Emery’s side sit fourth in the Premier League with a five-point cushion over Liverpool, and they have one foot in a Europa League semi-final after beating Bologna 3-1. But even with things looking good, Villa face a genuine recruitment headache this summer.

Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, and PSG are all hovering around Morgan Rogers, their most influential creative player. Bringing in a winger of real Premier League quality is now a necessity rather than a luxury, and that is why the links to West Ham’s Crysencio Summerville deserve a closer look.

The Summerville Situation

Former West Ham scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that the Hammers could realistically keep Summerville beyond the summer, despite interest from clubs like Aston Villa. Brown suggested West Ham would prefer to offload fringe players before they even think about selling their big stars, and Summerville himself isn’t expected to force a move.

“I wouldn’t say it’s a certainty that Summerville will leave West Ham,” Brown told Football Insider.

“Of course, they’re in a difficult financial situation and might end up getting relegated, so keeping their best players is going to be a tough ask.

“But ideally, they want to sell fringe players to raise money before they look at their star names.

“From Summerville’s point of view, this has been his first impressive season in the Premier League, at a club where he’s a key player and the fans love him.

“He’s been in the Championship before and achieved promotion with Leeds, so it’s not something alien to him; he knows what it’s like.

“West Ham will be keen to keep him because they’d have a better chance of coming back up with him in the side, even if it might be difficult.

“So I don’t think you can completely rule out any chance he might stay, even though there is interest from Premier League clubs who could take him away.

“I’d be surprised if he really pushed for it, I don’t think he’ll force a move away. If the right offer comes in then yeah, he could go, but he could also stick around.”

The Dutch winger has seven goals and two assists in 28 games this season, carrying a struggling side with an npxG per 90 of 0.31, putting him in the top 85th percentile of Premier League players. Those stats show exactly why West Ham want to keep him and why scouts are paying attention.

Would Summerville Actually Solve Aston Villa’s Problem?

I honestly feel it is probably not enough to justify the effort. Villa’s interest in Summerville makes sense on paper, as he is direct, productive, and proven at this level, but the logic starts to break down when you look at what the squad actually lack. Rogers plays as a fluid second attacker rather than a traditional wide forward, so the real gap is out wide for someone who provides width and consistent end product. Summerville is exactly that profile, but West Ham won’t let him go for cheap. If they end up in the Championship, negotiations could actually get harder; they might dig their heels in on a high price for the very players they need to get back up.

Aston Villa are also possibly stepping into Champions League football next season. While Summerville is talented, jumping from the Championship or a struggling Premier League side to the elite level Villa are reaching is a massive step. Emery demands high intelligence and discipline from his wingers, and it’s unclear if Summerville offers that specific structure. Villa should set their sights higher this window. Settling for a good option when they could find a world-class fit elsewhere would be a mistake, especially at a time when the club’s ambitions have never been higher.
