Atlanta Bravesâ Walt Weiss Makes Decision on Ronald Acuna Jr.âs Return From Injury
Atlanta Braves right fielder Ronald Acuna Jr. has been sidelined since May 2 after suffering a left hamstring strain while running to first base in a game against the Colorado Rockies.
Acuna had stayed healthy up until that point appearing in every game of the season prior to the setback, but unfortunately this is another year in which injuries have become part of his story.
Throughout his nine seasons in Atlanta, he has spent significant time on the injured list. He has torn the ACL in both knees, requiring two lengthy absences, and has also dealt with several smaller injuries along the way.
Even so, Acuna has been working to ensure this latest setback does not keep him out long. He has been seen participating in batting practice and running full sprints in the outfield, signs that his return could be approaching. However, manager Walt Weiss made it clear that he has decided Acuna will not return until he is ready to play defense again.
âBraves manager Walt Weiss says that OF Ronald Acuna Jr. will likely be activated when he is able to play in the field,â reported Braves reporter Barrett Sallee on Friday. However, Weiss also added shortly after that this is not guaranteed.
Acuna has already been ruled out for the remainder of Atlantaâs current homestand, but next week still remains a possibility if he continues progressing. The Braves want him fully functional, not limited to designated hitter duties, before bringing him back.
When he does return, assuming he can play the field soon, Acuna will look to get back to his usual standards. The former National League Rookie of the Year, MVP, five-time All-Star and three-time Silver Slugger has been productive this season but not at the elite level he has shown in the past.
Across 34 games, he posted a .252 batting average, .362 on-base percentage, .740 OPS, two home runs and nine RBIs.
The Braves remain one of the best teams in baseball, entering Friday with a 30-14 record. They were the fastest team to reach 30 wins this season, which makes their performance thus far even more impressive considering Acuna has not been at full strength.

If Acuna returns soon and ramps back up to his superstar form, Atlantaâs ceiling becomes even higher as the season moves forward. They missed out on postseason play in 2025 and have done everything possible to ensure that does not happen again this year.
