Bailey Ober pitched a complete game shutout, leading the Twins to a 3-0 victory over the Marlins. His performance marked a significant improvement from his previous outings.
Bailey Ober felt he was getting away from his release and had trouble locating his pitches last week as he pitched deeper into his starts. He had no such problem on Tuesday.
Really, he had no problems at all on Tuesday.
Ober needed just 89 pitches to record his first complete game shutout and second nine-inning complete game of his career. He threw 72% of his pitches for strikes.
He pounded the strike zone and worked efficiently through the Marlinsâ lineup, with six innings in which he threw 10 or fewer pitches.
The Twins starter gave up a pair of hits â one in the second inning and one in the fourth â but was otherwise flawless in his outing. He finished off his start by retiring the final 16 batters he faced in order.
Ober, who threw a Maddux â a complete-game shutout requiring fewer than 100 pitches, named after Hall of Famer Greg Maddux, who accomplished the feat 13 times.
Marlins starter Eury PĂ©rezâs no-hit bid was broken up with two outs in the fifth when Trevor Larnach sent a single to left.
Byron Buxton, who was on first after walking, reached third on the play and came around to score when the Twins successfully pulled off a double steal.
Larnach took off first, drawing a throw to second. He paused on his way and got second baseman Xavier Edwards to start chasing him back to first. Buxton, meanwhile, broke for home and slid in safely, headfirst, for the first run of the game and his first-career steal of home.
Ryan Jeffers followed that up with a two-run home run, giving the Twins a three-run lead.
The Twins will send starter Simeon Woods Richardson (0-5, 6.92) to the mound on Wednesday. Heâll be opposed by Woodbury native (2-0, 2.79), who is pitching against his hometown team for the first time in his career. The game is set to begin at 6:40 p.m.
