The Baltimore Orioles starting rotation has once again been a problem in 2026. This time, though, it is not entirely the front office’s fault. Baltimore added plenty of depth to the group this past offseason, trading for right-hander Shane Baz from the Tampa Bay Rays and signing both Zach Eflin and Chris Bassitt in free agency.
Unfortunately, the results have not matched the investment. The rotation has struggled when healthy, and the Orioles have also dealt with a long list of injuries to the pitching staff.
Left-hander Trevor Rogers has taken a step backward this season while also being unavailable. Rogers was placed on the 15-day injured list in late April with a severe flu and illness that kept him off the mound for multiple weeks. Now, he is finally ready to return.
The Orioles announced ahead of Tuesday’s game against the New York Yankees that Rogers had been reinstated from the 15-day injured list. Right-hander Jose Espada was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk in a corresponding move.
With Rogers back, the Orioles hope he can turn the page and regain the form he showed last season.
In 2025, the 28-year-old southpaw posted a 1.81 ERA in 18 starts, striking out 103 hitters in 109 2/3 innings. He established himself as the true ace of the staff and one of the most reliable left-handers in the American League during an otherwise disappointing season for Baltimore.
The results have been very different in 2026. Through his first six starts, Rogers owns a 4.75 ERA, nearly tripling last year’s mark. His command has been inconsistent, and he has struggled to work deep into games. If the Orioles want to turn their season around, it starts with Rogers pitching to expectations as the staff ace.

Rogers is currently in his third year with Baltimore. He spent the first four seasons of his career with the Miami Marlins, where he earned an All-Star selection in 2021. After two injury-filled years, he was traded to the Orioles at the 2024 deadline in a move that was meant to reset his career.
He is also entering free agency after the season, giving him even more incentive to perform. Whether his next contract comes from Baltimore or elsewhere, Rogers needs a strong finish to reestablish his value and help the Orioles stay in the playoff race. Baltimore missed out on postseason play last year. The expectations remains that will not happen again.
