Bundesliga Champions, on to the DFB-Pokal final, and in the semifinals of the UEFA Champions League, not to mention starting the season with the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup. It’s not been a bad season for Bayern Munich by any stretch of the imagtion under Vincent Kompany and his side have scored over 115 goals in the Bundesliga alone this season.
Losing out in the cup competitions would be devastating for the German *Rekordmeiste*r, but it would still be difficult not to applaud the brand of football they’ve been displaying throughout the course of the season. Kompany has them playing free flowing, attacking, possessive, expansive, and organized football and the amount of goals they’ve conceded from their past three matches doesn’t exactly do their overall season’s form justice.
While speaking to Sport-Informations-Dienst (SID) last week, former Bayern Munich and Germany midfielder Bastian Schweinstieger couldn’t hold back his admiration for what Kompany’s been doing at Bayern since he’s taken over for Thomas Tuchel. “I think he’s doing a fantastic job of not only dealing with and talking to the team, but also how he brings it to the public,” Schweinsteiger explained (via ), making note of how the Belgian manager always protects his players in the public eye, which isn’t an easy thing to do at a club that’s been famously dubbed *FC Hollywood*.
When Bayern had announced Kompany would be the man to take the managerial job after Tuchel, the decision was met with a fair amount of scrutiny on the back of the question of “is he experienced enough?” Earning a Premier League promotion with Burnley and then going back down to the Championship after managing Anderlecht doesn’t exactly bode a beamingly impressive coaching résumé, but Kompany was also a serial winner as a player at , which counts for something.
Either way, Schweinsteiger knows that consistent success is the bare minimum at FC Bayern, which is a non-negotiable, ever. “Of courses Kompany still needs success, If you don’t have it, then it’s difficult,” he stressed. Not being a winner at Bayern can have the opposite effect and really put one squarely fixed under microscope.
