The most elite of matchups, and in the eyes of most football fans, the true Champions League final.
And Bayern will go into this fixture without coach Vincent Kompany, which is an absolute shame. The coach, who is the first manager to beat Real Madrid in 14 years, was carded by the referee Slavko Vinčić for the way he reacted (and understandably so) to some egregious calls.
In fact, one might argue that Kompany was rather measured in his reaction. Anybody else would’ve blown a fuse and assaulted someone.
When asked after the game about the yellow card and having to miss the first leg of the semifinal clash against PSG (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), Kompany responded, “I always try to stay calm on the sideline. But it’s normal to speak when your player [Stanišić] is on the ground. I was surprised that I was shown a yellow card for that.”
So are we, coach, so are we.
Josip Stanišić was clearly fouled and dispossessed in the buildup to Real Madrid’s third goal, and the referee didn’t bat an eyelid, and neither did VAR intervene. As is the case with games against Real Madrid, the refereeing bias was blatantly obvious, and Kompany’s reaction was justified.
But it is what it is. Bayern now face a gargantuan challenge without the brains behind this team.
Hopefully he is able to issue commands and direct the players via Zoom.
