Bayern Munich legend warns club about Real Madrid comeback â âThey have a lot of individual talentâ
As Bayern Munich prepare to host Real Madrid at the Allianz Arena in the UEFA Champions League quarter-final second leg, few voices carry as much weight as Arjen Robben.
Having played for both clubs, Robben understands not only the rivalry but also the mental demands of nights like these.
With Bayern holding a narrow 2-1 advantage from the first leg, the Dutchman shared his honest assessment of where the tie stands.
Reflecting on the first leg at the Santiago Bernabeu, Robben made it clear that he felt Bayern were superior, even if the scoreline did not fully reflect it.
âFor me, Bayern were the better side. I think the scoreline was perhaps a bit low.â
He then expanded on why, despite Bayernâs dominance, the tie is far from over, highlighting Madridâs dangerous unpredictability.
âItâs still Real Madrid. Thatâs something the manager said too: you have to be alert and focused for 90 or 95 minutes against them.
âEven if you think, âWeâre winning 2-0 and everythingâs going wellâ, they can score out of nowhere.
âIn football, a match is never really over. Madrid are the best example of that.â
Message for Bayern
Looking ahead to the decisive match in Munich, Robben stressed that Bayern should trust what has worked all season rather than overthinking the occasion.
âBayern will try to stick to their game plan. They donât need to change their tactics. Itâs worked for them all season.
âOf course, the defence has to be solid and they need to attack as a unit. Itâs about approaching the match with passion and conviction. We need to be confident and not be afraid.â
For Robben, matches of this magnitude are often decided mentally rather than tactically, and he believes Bayern are well-equipped in that department.

âItâs absolutely essential. But I can also see that the mindset is right at the moment. The team has a lot of experience in this sort of match.
âSure, there are some young players too, but this team doesnât get scared or stressed in these situations.â
Respect for Real Madridâs legacy
Despite backing Bayern, Robben showed clear admiration for Madridâs history and global stature.
âEveryoneâs always talking about Los Blancos. Itâs a massive club on a global scale. Theyâve won the most Champions League titles â that says it all.
âTheyâre always looking to build the best team and want to sign the best players. They used to have the Galacticos.
âEven since then, with Cristiano Ronaldo, KakĂĄ and Xabi Alonso, theyâve always had great players and big names.â
Robben then pointed out what makes Real Madrid especially dangerous, which is their ability to punish teams in an instant.
âYou can never underestimate Real Madrid. Iâm impressed by their composure. Theyâre comfortable defending in their own half and then breaking out suddenly.
âSometimes they only need a split second. You have to be alert to that. They have a lot of individual talent. But I think Bayern Munich are a better team.
âThey also have very strong individual players who can decide a match.â
Lastly, when asked to pick a winner, Robben did not hesitate, making his backing for Bayern clear.
âBayern! Because theyâre consistent and everythingâs running like clockwork at the moment.
âTheyâre an unstoppable force, and I reckon theyâll keep it up right to the end,â he concluded.
