Ben Jacobs gives the latest on Carlos Baleba to Manchester United
Contrary to popular belief, the story between Carlos Baleba and Manchester United is not over just yet.
Baleba was linked with a move to Old Trafford last summer, and while no deal materialised, transfer journalist Ben Jacobs has now provided an update.
According to Jacobs, United’s position is clear: “If they go for Baleba, they don’t want to go above that 70 million number, and they want, therefore, a lower deal than the 75 they were prepared to pay last summer,” he said (h/t The United Stand).
This marks a tougher stance from United, who were willing to pay more twelve months ago – a reflection of both the changing landscape of Baleba’s market value and the club’s determination not to be held to ransom by Brighton again.
Jacobs also dispelled any suggestion that United’s interest has cooled due to Baleba’s difficult season. “Baleba is not in the decline,” he said. “Manchester United still see the potential.”
The midfielder has endured a relatively disappointing campaign, with many believing last summer’s drawn-out speculation over his future took a heavy toll on his performances.
However, his performances since the Africa Cup of Nations have improved, with teammate Pascal Gross labelling him a ‘top player’ after he helped the Seagulls down Chelsea last month.
United already agreed personal terms with Baleba last summer before Brighton refused to sanction the sale, meaning the hard work on the player’s side is complete.
Should they choose to revisit a move, United’s only task, then, is to reach an agreement with one of the Premier League’s most notoriously difficult-selling clubs, who are no longer holding out on the £100m quoted last summer.
The latest update indicates that the transfer story involving Carlos Baleba and Manchester United is still ongoing.
