In his rookie season with the Chicago Bears, it was clear as day that former USC Trojan Caleb Williams had been done a disservice by his coaching staff. He was sacked 68 times, one of the most in NFL history, and many were quick to label him a bust. Ben Johnson was brought in to get Caleb Williams exactly where he needed to be, and he did in the first year of their partnership.
In a recent article, Alyssa Barbieri highlights Ben Johnson and Caleb Williams' plan for 2026. Here is what Caleb said:
"I know that's one of the first things we talked about when we first met, I guess two days after the game was, "It's going to be more difficult. I'm going to push you more," Williams said, via ChicagoBears.com. "And my answer is: 'Yes, sir, let's do it.'
"I have a goal. He has a goal. And it aligns with each other. It's making sure we get to that end one. He's going to push me. I'm going to push myself. I'm going to push my teammates. He'll push my teammates.
"We're going to find ways to get better. We're going to find ways to reach what we want to reach. And that starts with the detail. That starts with the every day. That starts with week-to-week finding ways to get better."
Caleb Williams needed the right coaching to fix the disaster his rookie season was and get him back to playing to the level he did at USC. Ben Johnson pushed him, and he challenged him. The result from that was great, and Caleb Williams quickly became one of the more exciting players in the NFL. Another season of that, Caleb Williams should enter the top quarterback in the NFL conversations and the Bears should be legitimate NFC contenders.
