Wisconsin Badgers guard John Blackwell didnât just enter the transfer portal. He immediately became one of the most soughtâafter players available, and the race to snag him is already underway.
After a breakout junior season in which he averaged just over 19 points per game and earned AllâBig Ten honors, Blackwellâs decision sent shockwaves through a Wisconsin program that relied heavily on his scoring and playmaking.
Blackwell formed a potent backcourt duo with Nick Boyd, giving coach Greg Gard one of the conferenceâs most dynamic guard pairings. Even though Wisconsinâs NCAA Tournament run ended earlier than expected, Blackwellâs individual production was undeniable. He delivered multiple highâvolume scoring performances, showcased improved efficiency and consistently carried the Badgers in lateâgame situations.

âJohn Blackwell is one of the top guards to hit the portal,â On3âs Joe Tipton wrote.
Two key programs (and six total) have already emerged as early contenders: the Illinois Fighting Illini and the Duke Blue Devils. Others include the UCLA Bruins, Louisville Cardinals, Arizona Wildcats, and Alabama Crimson Tide.
Illinois makes sense for several reasons. It just wrapped up a surprise Final Four run, and the Illini ran into Blackwell on two separate occasions during the season, as he and the Badgers got the better of the Illini both times. This included a nail-biting 91-88 Big Ten Tournament loss in mid-March just before the NCAA Tournament began. Blackwell contributed 31 points, six rebounds and an assist.

Dukeâs interest hinges on NBA Draft decisions. If the Blue Devils lose multiple guards, Blackwell becomes an immediate highâusage option capable of anchoring an offense. His ability to create off the dribble, score at all three levels, and handle lateâclock situations aligns with what Duke typically seeks in veteran backcourt additions.
For Wisconsin fans, the idea of Blackwell joining Duke is far easier to stomach than seeing him suit up for Illinois â a direct Big Ten rival. But the Badgers have no control over the process, and Blackwellâs recruitment is only beginning.
Blackwellâs next step will likely hinge on role, roster construction, and the opportunity to elevate his national profile. He has the production, the rĂ©sumĂ© and the leverage to choose a situation that maximizes both his development and his exposure.
Blackwell is expected to commit in early May, per Draft Express.
Wherever he lands, Blackwell will immediately shift the balance of power for his next program. Few guards in the portal offer his combination of scoring volume, experience and proven success against highâlevel competition.
