Sheffield United brought their home campaign to a disappointing close with a 3-2 defeat against Preston North End on Saturday afternoon at Bramall Lane.
The visitors made a blistering start, taking the lead inside five minutes through Liam Lindsay. Rising sharply at the near post, the defender guided a precise header across goal and into the far corner after meeting an inswinging delivery from Alfie Devine.
United attempted to respond quickly and nearly did so when Callum OâHare volleyed over from a clever, looping ball played in behind by Tahith Chong. However, momentum continued to swing in Prestonâs favour following a booking for Thompson after a heavy challenge on Oliver Arblaster. From the resulting pressure, North End struck again, once more from a corner as Lindsay repeated his near-post movement to finish clinically, with Devine claiming his second assist of the afternoon.
A change at the break saw Harrison Burrows introduced, and the Blades came close to pulling one back early in the second half. Chong found space in the box from a deft chip by Gustavo Hamer but failed to convert. At the other end, only a superb save from Adam Davies denied Lewis Dobbin after had surged clear to create the chance.
Sheffield United's boss stated, 'We wonât be in this position next year,' indicating confidence in future improvements.

On 70 minutes, the referee awarded United a penalty after Vukcevic brought down Femi Seriki. Hamer stepped up and confidently dispatched the spot-kick to give the hosts a lifeline. But hopes of a comeback were quickly dented when Dobbin broke through again just six minutes later, rounding Davies with composure to restore the two-goal cushion.
The contest remained open, and with eight minutes to play, Patrick Bamford finished sharply at the near post to reignite belief. Despite late pressure, United were unable to find an equaliser.
After the match speaking to SUTV, manager Chris Wilder cut a frustrated figure, pointing to familiar issues that have plagued his side.
Wilder lamented his teamâs vulnerability at set-pieces, with both first-half goals coming from corners. âGoals that we conceded yet again are really poor, we looked fragile every time the ball came in our box from a set play, we never dealt with that well enough. We knew what the game plan was going to be, there was nothing in the game from a technical or tactical point of view but if you canât defend set plays or direct play then youâre going to open yourself up. It doesnât take a rocket scientist to know where we need to improve and we will improve.â
He added: âWeâre fragile, thereâs a softness about us that Iâve known about for quite a while and that I need to address. Thereâs an inability to put teams to the sword when weâre on top which we were for the majority of the second half.â
On Prestonâs early goals, Wilder stated, âJust ridiculous. We know where itâs going and itâs just a desire by certain players to go and stick their head on it. If they do then it doesnât come to anything and you deal with it, but we didnât and they scored two goals which gave them a huge boost.â
Looking ahead, Wilder made it clear that significant changes are on the horizon. He said: âWe certainly wonât be in this position next year, absolutely 100%. This time next year we wonât be in this position 100%. I havenât got a crystal ball; I donât know how the division goes or who comes down but we will get the right players in, the right characters and personalities in. Weâll work on the things we need to work on, weâll try to improve the things that have been okay.
He expanded: âA couple of the boys who are running their contracts down or coming to the end of their contracts weâll deal with that. We have to have that togetherness about us that deals with poor moments and suffering. You can see when teams stick it on us we go under and we need to change that.â
The defeat to Preston North End means Sheffield United have now lost more matches this season (22) compared to their previous two Championship campaigns combined (21). United will travel to Derby Countyâs Pride Park on Saturday afternoon to hopefully finish their season on a positive note.
