The Toronto Blue Jays are in a rough spot as far as their starting pitcher rotation is concerned.

Despite that, they still designated Eric Lauer for assignment. They decided he wasn't the option anymore in the fifth spot while a bunch of others are out injured.

Toronto could use a replacement -- and the logical guy might be one who just became a free agent.

The Miami Marlins recently parted ways with Chris Paddack, who had a 7.63 ERA this year but has been reliable in the past.

The Marlins signed him for $4 million before the year, so he was a decently regarded free agent.

The Athletic's Mitch Bannon suggested Paddack as a logical target:

Paddack has a career 4.79 ERA at the MLB level.

Last season, it was 5.35 between the Twins and Tigers. He doesn't seem to have the effectiveness that he showed early in his career with the San Diego Padres.

Still, he can give you some innings while you await the return of the other pitchers. And at this point, the Blue Jays can't be too picky.

Paddack is available and properly stretched out. That might be enough right now.
