Boston College baseball won the Beanpot by defeating Northeastern 3-1, with freshman Luke Gallo contributing significantly. They also took two out of three games against Virginia Tech, improving their ACC record to 11-7.
The vibes surrounding the Boston College baseball team remain immaculate after another strong week of both non conference and ACC play. The Eagles have won three of their four most recent games, including a big win yesterday to take home their first Beanpot since the 2023 season.
On Tuesday night, BC took down Northeastern 3-1 in a closely contested, well pitched game to win the Beanpot. Northeastern took the lead with a home run in the fourth inning, but the Eagles staff shut them down from there, with four different pitchers combining to allow just five hits in total. Meanwhile, freshman Luke Gallo was the star on offense, first tying things up with his first collegiate home run in the fifth inning before plating two more with a bloop single in the bottom of the sixth. Gallo’s hits were two of just three that the team managed on the night, but the Eagles added three stolen bases, including a huge double steal to put runners on second and third to allow Gallo to drive in the eventual winning run.
Over the weekend, the Eagles continued with their strong run of play in the ACC, taking two of three games against Virginia Tech to win their fourth conference series and improve to 11-7 in conference play.
The Eagles dropped the series opener on Friday afternoon in an 11 inning thriller by a 9-8 score. AJ Colarusso didn’t have his best stuff on the mound, allowing eight hits and five earned runs in five innings in his shortest outing since back in early March, but BC battled back a few different times to make things interesting. Ty Mainolfi had a two-run double in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings and a wild pitch tied things again in the 10th after Virginia Tech retook the lead, but the Hokies put up two in the top of the 11th and BC could only push one across in the bottom of the inning as they dropped a series opening game for the first time since March 13.
Saturday’s game was another crazy one, with the two teams facing off at Fenway park in BC’s annual ALS Awareness Game. The Eagles fell behind early once again as Virginia Tech put up four runs in the first two innings, but BC came storming back with a four run fourth inning highlighted by a bases clearing three-run double from Gunnar Johnson. Johnson had a huge day overall, going 2-for-2 with five RBIs on the day, but his biggest play came from behind the plate at the end of the game. After BC scored a few more runs with their typical small ball style of play, Virginia Tech managed to cut the lead down to just one run in the ninth inning. The Hokies were threatening to take the lead with runners on second and third and just one out, but Gavin Soares came up with a big strikeout and Johnson caught the Virginia Tech runner on third sleeping, throwing a dart to pick him off and end the game with a dramatic double play, giving BC an 8-7 win.
After two intense, back-and-forth games to start the series, Sunday’s rubber match was much more straight forward. BC jumped out to a 6-0 lead after three innings thanks in part to a two-run double from Johnson and the pitching staff took over from there. Tyler Mudd threw 105 pitches and went seven strong innings, allowing just six hits and two runs in his best and longest start of the season and Kyler Kipp retired all six batters that he faced in relief as BC picked up a 6-2 win to take the series.
COMING UP
The recent wins have BC at 11-7 in ACC play, good enough for third in the conference and 27-12 overall as this incredibly fun season just keeps on rolling. They continue to find ways to grind out wins while playing a very fun and unique style of baseball. They’ll have another chance to win some games in front of the home fans over the next few days with a game against UConn later this afternoon before they host Duke in a three-game series starting on Friday.
