LAFC returns to MLS play against the San Jose Earthquakes on Sunday Night Soccer, hosting a battle that will feature two of the sharpest teams in the league so far. After suffering their first loss of the season in Portland last Saturday, the Black and Gold will have a chance to rebound against a squad they defeated in both matchups of the 2025 campaign.
Los Angeles enters the match following a 1-1 draw against Cruz Azul on Tuesday, which advanced them into the semifinals of the Concacaf Champions Cup. Denis Bouanga provided the lone goal for LAFC in the final minute of stoppage time, bringing the final aggregate score to 4-1.
The star of the night for L.A., however, was Hugo Lloris, who added another inspiring performance to his age 39 season by making eight saves in a gritty and physical match. His efforts will be needed again in a big way against a San Jose unit that is currently tied for the fourth-most goals scored in MLS (13).
"It's definitely a confidence builder," said LAFC forward Tyler Boyd, speaking on the boost that Lloris gives the team with his play. "He's playing so well. It's incredible what he's done."
Lloris has yet to concede a goal in league play this season after resting in the 2-1 loss to Portland, which featured a heavily rotated lineup.
LAFC are 10-1-2 across all competitions in 2026 and 5-1-1 in league play, currently two points behind both San Jose and the Vancouver Whitecaps (6-1-0) for the top spot in the Western Conference. The 'Quakes have strung together four consecutive victories, most recently picking up a 2-0 shutout over Phoenix Rising FC in the US Open Cup. They will have star forward Timo Werner back in action, who had missed the squad's two previous MLS games with a lower-body injury before returning to the lineup against Phoenix.
LAFC recently had a 1-1 draw against Cruz Azul, which advanced them to the semifinals of the Concacaf Champions Cup.

San Jose will put L.A.'s reputation as one of the most lethal sides at home to the test, having earned three road victories in just as many tries this season. The Black and Gold, however, are 6-0-1 at BMO Stadium across all competitions in 2026 and have outscored opponents 17-1 in the process.
Head coach Marc Dos Santos noted San Jose's status as a tough opponent to play defensively. He said that they play well together and know what they want to do.
"We know it's going to be a very hard opponent for us. What's important is to switch on again," he said. "We had the two days off after Cruz Azul, now it's the biggest game of our season."
Both sides have shown defensive prowess, tied for the fewest goals conceded in the league (2).
"I think we have to play our best on Sunday," said midfielder Timothy Tillman. "It's going to be hard to break them, especially defensively, they've done really good. It's going to be as important as the last game."
Dos Santos also spoke about the challenges that come with playing such a busy schedule, which forces him to prepare his squad differently from other teams.
"It's a disadvantage when you cannot prepare the week like other teams prepare when they play against you. It's a disadvantage when you have to choose which players play when, because you're not at your fullest all the time," he said. "I trust everybody on the roster, but you always want to play every game with everybody available."
The lineup should, nonetheless, be close to full strength on Sunday. Dos Santos announced that midfielder Amin Boudri will remain out for a couple more weeks, dealing with a hamstring injury he felt before LAFC's April 4 match against Orlando City. Midfielder Stephen Eustáquio will rejoin the team on Friday night and should return to the field sometime next week.
