The Atlanta Braves have had a solid bullpen to start the season, which was a major point of emphasis this offseason. However, Aaron Bummer has struggled for Atlanta, something that was not expected.
“Bummer's velocity drop is concerning, but he’s also just not the same pitcher this year as he’s been for the Braves in past seasons. Including Sunday’s game, Bummer faced 23 batters, gave up seven hits, including three home runs, struck out four, and walked one,” HTHB’s Fred Owens wrote.
There is growing concern that his struggles could lead to a roster move, potentially resulting in Bummer being designated for assignment. That decision could come when Raisel Iglesias returns on Tuesday, though other options remain on the table.
“Think there's a decent chance the Braves DFA Bummer on Tuesday when Iglesias returns. Much easier option is Carrasco but they might want his rubber arm for the rest of the road trip. I suppose they could also send Ritchie down after Monday's start,” Battery Power’s Scott Coleman posted.

If the Braves choose not to move on from Bummer, they could be left in a difficult situation with the left-hander remaining in the bullpen despite his struggles.
“Aaron Bummer making $9.5 million this year is one of those contracts that is so bad that instead of DFAing him he’ll be kept on the roster hurting this team every time he makes an appearance,” Braves reporter Kevin Keneely wrote.
Bummer still has the ability to turn things around, but if he doesn’t, Atlanta may be forced to continue relying on him in key situations against left-handed hitters. Dylan Lee is currently the only other left-handed option in the bullpen following the departure of José Suarez.
The Braves expected more from Bummer entering the season, but that has not been the case so far. If his struggles continue, it could create a difficult situation for Atlanta as they determine their next move with the veteran left-hander.
