While the Red Sox had a great start from Garrett Crochet yesterday, they had a terrible one from Brayan Bello the day before. With that in mind, Bello’s time with Boston could be coming to an end.
Bello has been quite bad this season, as the usual starting pitcher is not even a qualified this season, as he has 22 innings pitched, and the Sox are 10-16. To be qualified, Bello needs to average an inning pitched for every team game, and with 22 IP to 26 games played, he doesn’t qualify.

If Bello were a qualified starter, he would be the worst in the MLB. He’s posted a 1-3 record, a 9.00 ERA, 15 Ks, and a WHIP of 2.273. This is insane compared to his last season, where he was one of the better pitchers in the MLB.

With this horrible start, his spot in the rotation should be up for grabs. With Sonny Gray currently on the IL, Boston’s No. 1 prospect and the MLB’s No. 15 overall Payton Tolle is currently replacing him.
After an electric season debut, Tolle should definitely be considered to take Bello’s spot. He pitched six innings in his recall, got 11 punchouts, and only gave up one run. Tolle will have one or two more starts until Gray’s return, and if he continues this trend, Bello should really be worried.

If Tolle does take his spot, trading Bello might be the smart thing to do. His name was floated over the offseason, and his past seasons have shown him to be a decent middle-to-backend of the rotation starter.
Bello was thought to be the Sox’ ace of the future, and for a long time they have kept him in the rotation waiting for that breakout year. Now, with another subpar season so far after his first decent one, it might be time to close the book on Bello.
