Iowa's 2026 football schedule features a critical stretch of games against Michigan, Ohio State, and Washington in just 14 days. This sequence will be pivotal in determining the team's season success.
Every year, college football teams face a season-defining stretch of games. Those 2-4 games are good indicators of whether or not the season was a success. They can make-or-break the perception of a team.
Last season, Iowa faced that stretch in early November. Back-to-back games against Oregon and USC were going to tell whether the Hawkeyes were true College Football Playoff contenders. Iowa lost both those games by one possession, leading to a season of frustrating what-if’s.
It’s not even Summer time yet, and the season-defining stretch has already been revealed for the 2026 Hawkeyes. With the recent news that Iowa will travel to Washington for a Friday night game in early October, the Hawkeyes will have to battle three high-caliber Big Ten foes in 14 days.
Iowa will travel to the Big House for a matchup with Michigan before hosting Ohio State and then going out west to take on Washington. They do all of that in less than 14 days from late September to early October.
The stretch starts on September 26, when Iowa hits the road for the first time to play Michigan. The Wolverines return a lot of talent, most notably five-star quarterback Bryce Underwood. New head coach Kyle Whittingham brings a steadiness that the program desperately needs.

Throw in the fact that Iowa will have a quarterback making his first-ever Big Ten road start at one of the toughest venues in the conference, and this is a very tall task. It’s not impossible, but the Hawkeyes will need to play at their very best to pick up a victory here.
A week later, perennial national powerhouse Ohio State will visit Kinnick Stadium. The Buckeyes bring back Heisman Trophy finalist Julian Sayin at quarterback, along with potentially the best wide receiver in the country in Jeremiah Smith. The defense is nasty, and the culture is strong under head coach Ryan Day.
Taking down Ohio State at home as a big underdog wouldn't be super out of the ordinary for Iowa (see 2017), but after a grueling game at the Big House, this is far from an ideal schedule.
Then, six days later, the Hawkeyes will have to go to the West Coast to play Washington. The Huskies have one of the best home-field advantages in the conference and a star quarterback in Demond Williams Jr. Things haven't gone well out West for Iowa recently, a trend that will have to change this season if they want to achieve their goals.
In less than 14 days, Iowa could either be a favorite to make the College Football Playoff or scrambling to salvage its season in the back half. It's a daunting, but also exciting stretch of games for the team and fans alike.
Before Halloween decorations have even gone up at some houses, everyone will know just how good the Hawkeyes are in 2026. They’ll know if Iowa is a real playoff contender or destined for another 8-win season. That stretch of games will define what Iowa football is next season. Let’s see how they do.
