The Denver Broncos hosted two tryout quarterbacks at rookie minicamp over the weekend: veteran Nathan Peterman and rookie E.J. Warner. Neither quarterback was signed after the tryout, but coach Sean Payton gave both of them positive reviews.
"So overall, both quarterbacks have done a good job," Payton said after Saturday's practice. "When you get a bunch of this offense, and they’ve been in different systems. One’s obviously older, the other one is young, but they’ve both done a really good job. It’s the first challenge. I can remember being that guy and not doing well. [I] didn’t know the fronts. There’s nothing that can slow a practice down more than a quarterback that can’t get in and out of the huddle. Those two have done a great job."
Payton also provided a positive update on starting QB Bo Nix (ankle), who is on track to be full-speed ahead of training camp later this summer. Even if Nix is not able to participate in organized team activities (OTAs) in early June, Payton suggested that Jarrett Stidham and Sam Ehlinger would be enough to handle the spring workload.
"[G]enerally with those practices, two [QBs] is not a problem," Payton said of OTAs. "It would be more of an issue if you felt a player was going to be a PUP in training camp, and that’s not going to be the case [with Nix]."
The Broncos hosted both quarterbacks for tryouts but ultimately decided not to sign either player despite positive reviews from Coach Sean Payton.
Coach Sean Payton noted that both quarterbacks performed well, highlighting their ability to adapt to the offense and manage practice effectively.
Bo Nix is on track to be fully recovered ahead of training camp, and Coach Payton indicated that the team has enough depth at quarterback to manage spring practices.
