TL;DR
The trade between the Cleveland Browns and Jacksonville Jaguars for the 2025 NFL Draft has proven to be significantly beneficial for the Browns one year later. While the Jaguars selected Travis Hunter, he struggled in his rookie season and will now focus solely on playing as a defensive back.
This time last year, the Cleveland Browns and the Jacksonville Jaguars had already agreed to a deal that sent the 2nd, 104th, and the 200th pick in the 2025 NFL Draft to Jacksonville in exchange for the fifth, 36th, 126th, and Jacksonville's first rounder in 2026 to Cleveland.
The trade netted out with Jacksonville selecting Travis Hunter, Bhayshul Tuten, and Rayuan Lane III while Cleveland nabbed Mason Graham, Quinshon Judkins, Dylan Sampson, and a player to be determined with their second first-round pick this year.
This trade was a heavy win by Cleveland from the second it was agreed to, and as we stand a year later, it is even more of a Browns win. The attraction to the second pick in the draft was completely wrapped up in Travis Hunter. Hunter was fresh off of winning the Heisman Trophy in 2024 by being a key component on both sides of the ball for the Colorado Buffalo.
In his rookie year, Hunter tried to be a two-way player, and it never worked out. He became average on offense and average on defense before an injury ended his season. He finished the season with 28 catches for 298 yards and a score to go along with 15 tackles and 3 pass breakups in just seven games played.
Now, this week, it was announced that the two-way experiment is officially over. Hunter is going to specifically be a defensive back going forward. The Jaguars may have a couple of offensive packages for him, but the main focus for him will be at the cornerback position. Now, this isn't to say that he won't be a good cornerback. I think that he will be.
What we are saying is that Cleveland netted an extra second-round pick (Quinshon Judkins) and an extra first-round pick (to be determined) to move down three spots and still get the guy they wanted in last year's draft in exchange for a good cornerback.
This is an all-time one-sided trade. All Cleveland has to do is cash out on Jacksonville's pick that they acquired in the trade. If they nail the pick, the move is a complete masterpiece by Andrew Berry to get your running back of the future and either your offensive tackle or wide receiver of the future.
It was a lopsided deal the moment it happened, and one year later, Cleveland's draft night trade with Jacksonville continues to be heavily weighted in favor of the Cleveland Browns.
