With all the questions surrounding the Cleveland Browns' quarterback situation, we have to start listening to what the coaching staff and front office say about what they're looking for.
Not that it guarantees any player to win the starting job, but we can start to put two and two together based on the comments we hear from some of the higher-ups in the organization.
One of the more interesting comments came from new head coach Todd Monken. He has been around some very good quarterbacks throughout his career, so he'll be in a bit of a different situation out in Cleveland. None of the traits he's looking for is anything out of the ordinary.
While he'd like a mobile quarterback who can make plays on the run and do what's necessary to keep a play alive, his bigger want is for quarterbacks to complete passes on third down and in two-minute drills.
âMost coaches would have an affinity for quarterbacks that are mobile, but they also have an affinity for quarterbacks that can complete passes and are really good on third down and in the two minute,â Monken said, per Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com.
âSo it certainly benefits you to have a mobile quarterback, but ultimately thatâs just a piece of it.â
Monken understands what it takes to play at the highest level, as well as when, so completing passes is obviously at the top of that list.
Whether it be on first down, third down, red zone situations, or anything else, the Browns have to do a better job of simply taking what they can get. Perhaps whoever does that better in practice will get the starting job.
Todd Monken wants a mobile quarterback who can make plays on the run and excel in completing passes on third downs and during two-minute drills.
Having worked with successful quarterbacks in the past, Todd Monken brings a wealth of knowledge to his expectations for the Browns' quarterback position.
The uncertainty surrounding the Browns' quarterback situation poses challenges for Todd Monken as he seeks to identify the right player to fit his system.
