Morgan Geekie scored the most improbable goal of the NHL playoffs on Tuesday night for the Boston Bruins against the Buffalo Sabres.
That came about 48 hours after he passed up the most open net he'll see in these entire playoffs.
It's certainly already been an eventful start to the postseason for Geekie. He scored a goal in Game 1 before the Sabres rallied to stun the Bruins.
But in that same game, he passed up an incredible opportunity. With just a couple seconds left in the first period, he got the puck to the left of the goal, and Sabres goalie Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen was nowhere to be found. He had gotten caught on the other half of the goal in traffic, and all Geekie had to do was toss the puck into a wide open net.
For whatever reason, Geekie was so locked in on passing that he didn't even notice.
Contrast that to Tuesday night's Geekie goal, when he just lofted in a backhand flip toward the other end to allow Boston to go for a change.
Somehow, it took a wild hop past UPL and spun into the goal.
This post on X sums up the contrast in the moments, in which the one you'd think ended up as a goal didn't, and vice versa:
Geekie will take the lucky goal, and the Bruins will happily head home for Game 3 having knotted the series at a game apiece.
Seems like you can count on Geekie being at the center of things going forward. He's been quite active and involved thus far.
