Young made an appearance on ESPNâs Pat McAfee Show on Wednesday, and the 28-year-old New Yorker responded when asked to name one PGA Tour rule that he would like to see changed.
âOne that I would change? Um, I donât know. I mean, golf is strange in that way because I feel like thereâs so many unique scenarios that can go on,â Young admitted.
âWeâre just in the habit of calling a rules official, pretty much no matter what happens, even if itâs a very routine one that we all know, just because if theyâre there, you basically canât be faulted for it.

âSo I donât know. I mean, the ball moving one is pretty relevant right now. I mean, obviously I wasnât I wasnât trying to hit the ball. I didnât try to give myself a better lie.
âI had already, we were playing lift, clean and place. So I had already put it basically up on a tee. So there was no advantage to me doing what I did to move the ball. All I did was put my club down.
âSo, you know, thatâs one of those ones that, you know, obviously, there was no intent to do anything that was going to help me. I already had the best lie I could ask for.
âIt seems like maybe that one doesnât need to be a penalty, but itâs just kind of how itâs always been.â
Why the PGA Tour should keep rule 9.2 despite harsh Cam Young penalty
Young is absolutely correct with his comments.
The one-stroke penalty he received after violating rule 9.2 at Trump National Doral on Sunday was extremely unjust.
However, it is a very difficult rule to change, and hereâs whyâŠ
If the PGA Tour did scrap the one-shot penalty for players whoâve caused their balls to move, surely it would be open season for golfers to improve their lies and then just claim that it wasnât intentional if they are accused of doing so.
The ruling that Cam Young fell foul of feels like a harsh penalty, but perhaps one that needs to remain in place on the PGA Tour for the foreseeable future.
Golfers will always receive bad breaks when it comes to rulings throughout their careers, and last week in Miami was Youngâs time to go through that.
