Oklahoma State Cowboys football coach Eric Morris may have the most intriguing program in the Big 12 during the 2026 season. While not the top dogs to win the conference – that’s still the Texas Tech Red Raiders, even amid Brendan Sorsby’s career uncertainty due to his gambling revelation – the Pokes are expected to be a tough out this fall.
CBS Sports’ Austin Nivison believes Oklahoma State will be Texas Tech’s key game this fall. Per Nivison, “The Red Raiders' road slate isn't exactly filled with landmines, but this visit to Stillwater is interesting. The Oklahoma State offense has undergone a major facelift with the hiring of Eric Morris and the addition of Drew Mestemaker via the transfer portal at quarterback. If their slew of Denton transplants work out, the Cowboys could be a dangerous underdog. Texas Tech can't be complacent after a 42-0 blowout last season.”
Eric Morris is recognized for revitalizing the Oklahoma State offense and successfully integrating 17 transfers, including standout quarterback Drew Mestemaker.
The Oklahoma State Cowboys football team acquired a total of 17 transfers from Eric Morris's previous program, North Texas Mean Green.
Drew Mestemaker, who led in passing yards and touchdowns, is expected to significantly enhance the Cowboys' offensive capabilities in the upcoming season.

Including Drew Mestemaker, the leading quarterback in passing yards (4,379), passing touchdowns (34), and yards per attempt (9.5), the Cowboys added 17 transfers total from Morris’s North Texas Mean Green. 10 were on the offensive side of the ball. Seven were on the defense, helping Skyler Cassity, who also comes from the Mean Green as OSU’s new defensive coordinator.
Morris’s goal, like every other first-year head coach, is to be the next Curt Cignetti. As most know by now, Cignetti transformed the Indiana Hoosiers into a playoff team in year one and a national champion in year two.
Morris has an easier road in the Big 12 with the Cowboys, but there is less margin for error, considering the Big 12 will probably always be a one-bid league. Like Cignetti brought the parts that worked with the James Madison Dukes, Morris is hoping to replicate that with North Texas.
In Stillwater, they’re hoping lightning strikes twice with that formula.
