CBS Sports: Vikings Have Leagueâs 8th-Worst QB Room
Vikings fans remain on cloud nine over the club snatching Murray from free agency for $1.3 million, but that enthusiasm is evidently reserved for the teamâs faithful.
Calling Minnesotaâs quarterback situation the NFLâs eight-worst, Podell opined, âOne would think the Minnesota Vikingsâ signing of two-time Pro Bowl quarterback Kyler Murray would keep them off this list, but thatâs not the case. Murray earned his Pro Bowl selections in 2020 and 2021. Thatâs a lifetime ago in NFL years. From 2022 to 2025, Murray missed 30 of his possible 68 games.â
âIn the five games Murray played for the Cardinals in 2025, he averaged a career low 227.0 total yards per game. Recent first-round pick J.J. McCarthy was the worst quarterback in the NFL in 2025, which sparked the signing of Murray. McCarthyâs performance was simply incredible considering the offensive ecosystem under 2024 Coach of the Year Kevin OâConnell.â
Some have argued that Minnesota has the best of both worlds: a proven commodity in Murray and a still-developing McCarthy. Podell isnât buying it.
He continued, âDespite an electrifying supporting cast, McCarthy ranked dead last in the league in completion percentage (57.6%), touchdown-to-interception ratio (11-12), and passer rating (72.6). Murray could rediscover his early career form with Minnesota.â
âMurray is one of just four players in NFL history with 20,000-plus passing yards (20,460) and 30-plus rushing touchdowns (32) through his first seven seasons, joining Josh Allen, Cam Newton and Lamar Jackson. Week 1 starter: Kyler Murray.â
One Battle after Another
CBS Sportsâ reaction was unequivocal: the Vikingsâ quarterback dilemma persists. This prevailing sentiment explains why Murrayâs signing was met with a national shrug.
To understand their current situation, consider their recent history. Six years of Kirk Cousins sharply divided the fan base. Sam Darnold and McCarthy followed. Darnold initially surged before faltering at the worst possible moment(s) in 2024, later departing to win a Super Bowl in Seattle. McCarthy, meanwhile, lost his rookie year to a torn meniscus and has yet to establish himself as a starter, raising lingering durability concerns.
In response, Minnesota pivoted, signing Murray for $1.3 million.
From an outside perspective, however, the conclusion remains unchanged: uncertainty, skepticism, and a quarterback room that is the leagueâs eighth-worst.

And this is all on top of NFL.comâs ranking the Vikings as the NFLâs fifth-worst team after the draft and Bleacher Report calling Minnesotaâs draft class âbaffling.â Everywhere you turn, thereâs something that somebody doesnât like about the 2026 Vikings.
Murrayâs Potential
In Minnesota, Murray doesnât have to save the operation. He has to distribute the damn ball, stay efficient, and trust OâConnellâs system. The offensive fit is evident. Murrayâs typical 17-game pace â around 4,000 passing yards, 30 touchdowns, and 600 rushing yards â combined with a career completion percentage near the top of NFL history, makes his skillset incredibly easy to envision within an offense featuring Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, T.J. Hockenson, Jordan Mason, and Aaron Jones.
Equally important is the defensive side of the ball. Brian Flores transformed the Vikingsâ identity upon his arrival, leading them to rank second in defensive EPA per play from 2023 to 2025.
It means Murray is trading Arizonaâs 30th-ranked defense from that same period for one of the NFLâs most reliable units â a truly massive lifestyle change for any quarterback.

While the Cardinals certainly had offensive weapons, the Vikings offer a superior arsenal: Jefferson, Addison, Hockenson, and an offensive playcaller adept at creating open targets. Murray wouldnât need to conjure magic every Sunday; instead, he would thrive with rhythm and competent play.
Starting Over if Everything Fails to Launch
The âgood news?â If Podell has it right, and the Vikingsâ quarterback room is truly lousy, 2027 is the perfect time to reset. It will mark three years since the McCarthy draft pick, and the 2027 rookie quarterback class is fundamentally loaded. The 2026 class was not; next Aprilâs is, indeed.
Itâs probably more likely that Murray just clicks with OâConnell, creating conversations next offseason about the price of Murrayâs extension, but if everything turns rotten, thereâs no better time in quarterback-speak than 2027 to reset with a new throw at the dartboard.
