The Boston Red Sox turned to left-handed pitcher Ranger Suarez in the series finale against the Philadelphia Phillies in hopes of a series win.
Suarez was making the start after exiting his last outing due to a hamstring injury, which was still a question mark. Yet, despite the injury concerns, Suarez pitched well as he went 5.1 innings, allowing zero runs, four hits, and he struck out eight.
“All things considered, coming off the hamstring, he looked sharp,” said interim manager Chad Tracy after the game on Thursday. “Velocity was up, did what he wanted to with the ball in and out and down (in the zone), just like last time. A really, really good outing.”
It was a solid performance from Suarez which put Boston in a spot to win, however, it was the Phillies who picked up a 3-1 win to get the series win at Fenway Park.
Suarez, however, was removed from the game after just 76 pitches, but Tracy felt like his starter was getting fatigued.
“We had felt like even prior to that last inning, (Suarez) was starting to fatigue a little bit,” said Tracy of pulling Suarez. “Based on the fact that he hadn't thrown 11-12 days, it felt like that was the right time to cut it.”
