Now in his second season with the Boston Red Sox, Marcelo Mayer is still trying to find his role and establish himself as an everyday player.
Alex Cora didn't make that easy for the former first-round draft pick, frequently holding him out of the lineup and benching him against left-handed pitchers, slowing his development. Of Mayer's 183 career plate appearances entering play on Tuesday, only 33 have come against southpaws.
Fortunately, interim manager Chad Tracy plans to change that.
Prior to Monday's 5-0 win over the Toronto Blue Jays, Tracy said he wants to get Mayer more at-bats against lefties and use him as the team's second baseman.
"I think for right now (Trevor Story) is our shortstop, and I think for right now, if he’s off, we’ll probably see () there. I’m going to let Marcelo settle in at second base for the time being," Tracy said via MassLive's Christopher Smith.
