Charles Oliveira defended his BMF title win over Max Holloway, responding to critics who labeled his performance as boring. He emphasized the importance of adapting his fighting style based on past experiences, particularly after being criticized for standing and trading in previous bouts.
Charles Oliveira wants fans to make up their minds regarding his fighting style.
Oliveira (37-11 MMA, 25-11 UFC) dominated Max Holloway on the mat to claim the BMF title at UFC 326%20%E2%80%93%20to%20win%20BMF%20title). Holloway had no answer for Oliveira's stifling jiu jitsu but showed heart to fend off the UFC's all-time leader in submission finishes.
Many observers dubbed Oliveira's performance as boring, but "Do Bronx" isn't having it. He wants to remind everyone of how much he was chastised when he exchanged with Ilia Topuria in the pocket and got knocked out at UFC 317.
"What do I make of the criticism I received after the BMF title win over Max Holloway? Now I'm going to ask all of you a question: If I'd stood and traded with Max Holloway like I did in other fights and got knocked out, what would you have said? I know. 'Stupid as f*ck instead of using his jiu-jitsu,'" Oliveira said in an interview with CasinoHawks. "Because when I got knocked out by Topuria, everyone said the same thing. 'Stupid as f*ck, all he had to do was grapple.' How do you want me to fight? Is it like a video game?
"Are you going to tell me on the internet how I'm supposed to fight? 'Go in there just doing flashy stuff, just stay on the jab.' Fighting doesn't work like that. You only win a fight if you build a strategy, go in there and win. Every time I've had a strategy and gone away from it, I lose, and then the internet goes mad. When I came in and fought properly – put on a show, because I wasn't just holding Max doing nothing, I was putting on a show, trying to submit, showing skills, making transitions, landing shots – then suddenly the fight was bad."
Oliveira criticized fans for labeling his performance as boring, arguing that he adapted his strategy to avoid being knocked out, as he was previously criticized for standing and trading in fights.

Oliveira, who has the most finishes and submissions in UFC history, has thrilled fans with plenty of impressive finishes over the likes of Michael Chandler, Dustin Poirier, and current interim champ Justin Gaethje.
"So, honestly how do you want me to fight? But pick one way properly and stick to your word until the end," Oliveira said. "Because the same people who criticized me when I lost, saying I was stupid as f*ck, are criticizing me now because I used jiu-jitsu. Truthfully it's a bunch of clueless people with nothing to do, who haven't got the guts to get up and wash a pair of pants or knickers, and stay online talking rubbish.
"That's the reality. Today, MMA is for the man who thinks, for the man who studies, for the clever one who knows what he's going to do so he doesn't make mistakes. If you make mistakes, you end up getting done over. But if you look at the big names, the elite lads, they talk about the great show, the art, the movement, the way it was done. Then you look at the ones criticizing, the ones talking nonsense, they haven't won f*ck all, done f*ck all."
