MADISON — Quin Grosso dashed across the field shouting, "Let's go! It's Cougar county, baby!" And then the Chatham boys lacrosse players were off and running, following the junior midfielder and their oversized blue-and-white flag to the fan section on the far side of Drew University's Ranger Stadium.
The Cougars outlasted Delbarton, 12-7, to earn its first Morris County Tournament boys lacrosse title. And they wanted to make sure everyone knew how it happened.
"It's just awesome," said Chatham senior Shep Boyd, who had five goals and two assists in the final and was named the MCT MVP. "The public schools are back in action. It's so exciting right now. It's just awesome to bring it back. It should belong here for now."

"It's honestly unbelievable," junior attack Nick Lagunowich said. "We've had this game circled on our calendars since it ended last year. We've been looking forward to it. ... We just knew the lights wouldn't be too bright for it. The boys pulled through. It's an unbelievable feeling. The Cougars JV got the party started early, grilling dozens of hot dogs in the parking lot before the final. Juniors Mir Bhara and Bryce Maynard kept their teammates fed, and brought a plate piled high onto the field during warmups. With about 20 minutes to go before the opening faceoff, the JV ran onto the field, helmets and pads on, and lined up on the sideline next to the varsity.
As the Chatham varsity scored goal after goal, the younger guys came up with unique celebrations, like the worm or rolling over and over in unison.
It was obvious how important the MCT title was to even the last guy on the Cougars sideline. Coach Christian Scarpello said it's been his No. 1 focus since taking the job five years ago.
"States are important, but to me, this is the greatest tournament in New Jersey lacrosse," said Scarpello, who also plays defensive midfield for the Premier Lacrosse League's Carolina Chaos. "It's the most competitive, and when I got here, the only goal was to win the county and bring the first county final home to Chatham. We just did that."
