Chelsea attacking problem “baked into their model” according to study of Blues attackers

Chelsea have a serious system problem in attack right now, that one can’t just blame on their players or bad luck.

We’ve just written a piece here about Chelsea’s run of games without a goal. The Blues have lost four in a row without scoring, and since their last goal have had 67 shots without scoring. Some other Premier League teams have scored as many as 8 goals in that time.

The point is that Liam Rosenior’s team are creating low quality chances, and that’s backed up on a player by player basis too.

Chelsea individuals undershoot their xG

The Sky Sports article notes that every single one of our attackers has underperformed the number of goals you’d expect from their chances.

Part of that can be blamed on the players – Cole Palmer at his best would outshoot his xG, for example. But when every attacker has the same problem, you have to look at the system.

When games are so often decided in a single moment – just like on Saturday – you need players with who can go above and beyond the chances they’re provided with if you want to get big results. As the Sky article puts it:
